He continues, Trust the people - the wise and the ignorant, the good and the bad - with the gravest questions, and in the end you educate the race. At the same time you secure, not perfect institutions, not necessarily good ones, but the best institutions possible while human nature'is the basis and the only material to build with.That is the fundamental faith back of the extension move ment. It is the faith of democracy. It finds expression in the potent in¿uence of public opinion among us. It is the advice of Washington in his Farewell Address: Promote, then, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffa sion of knowledge.
