Excerpt from A Plain Guide to Greek AccentuationThese notes are an attempt to steer a middle course between the diffusiveness on the one hand, and the meagreness on the other, which so far have characterised the teaching of Greek Accent nation. From my own experience I do not believe that the custom of giving a beginner a few of the principal rules and exceptions, and then allowing him to pick up his knowledge by practice, zle. At random, is ever a success, and on this account I have endeavoured to make my rules as exhaustive as possible, and also to give the chief exceptions in each case, as I believe that 'faith in a rule is severely shaken when important exceptions to it are daily encountered.
