Excerpt from A New Method of Rosie Crucian Physick: Wherein Is Shewed the Cause, and Therewith Their Experienced Medicines for the Cure of All Diseases By our feveral Organs, we have fe veral Conceptions of feveral qualities in the objects, for by light we have a conception or image compofed ofcolour and figure, which is all the notice and knowledge the object im parteth to us of its nature, by the excellency of the eye. By Hearihg we have a conceptionhcalled Sound, which is all the knowledge we have of the quality of the objeét from the Bar: And fo the relt of the Sences are alfo conceptions of feveral qualities or natures of their objects. Becaufe the Image in vilion confining ofcolour and fhape, is the knowledge we have of the qualities of the object of that Sence, it is no hard matter for a man to fall into this 0 pinion, That the fame colour 8: lhape are the very qualities themfelves, and for the fame caufe that found 8: noife are the qualities of a piece of Canon or Quivering charged with fulphurous Powder, fired, or of the Air: And this opinion hath been fo long received, that the contrary mult needs ap pear a great Paradox. The fame qualities are calier in a bell, and yet the introduétion of fpecies vifible and intelligible, (which is neceffary for the maintenance of that opinion) palling to~and fro from the objeét is worfe then any Para dox, as being a plain impofsibility. I {hall therefore endea vor to make plain thcfe points. That the fubjefi wherein colour and image are inherent, is not the objeé'r or thing leen.
