Excerpt from A Manual of Illumination on Paper and VellumThe Celtic style of ornament, after its introduction into this country, became very popular, and in¿uenced, by degrees, the continental schools. We find the intri cate tracery combined with the half classic Byzantine in the examples handed down to us from the time of Charle magne, both of French and Italian execution.By the IX century, that is the reign of Charles the Bald of France, the taste for gold letters and ornaments on purple grounds became very general. But books of the same or a similar style had reached England still earlier. In 596, Augustine the missionary had come over to romanize the Saxons, and had been supplied with various books from Italy. Soon after his arrival a scriptorium seems to have been founded. Perhaps Kent: and Saxon artists taught what may be called an anglo-roman stylemroman draperies being imitated in the miniatures, and the uncial or rustic letters adopted in the text.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
