Excerpt from A History of the Scottish People From the Earliest Times, Vol. 5: From the Accession of Charles I, 1625, to the Union of the Kingdoms, 1706The first public event by which the new reign was signalized was the fulfilment of the marriage treaty with the French princess, and on the lst Of May (1625) Charles married Henrietta Maria by proxy at Paris, while the Duke of Bucking ham was sent to bring the bride to England. But no sooner had this vain man arrived in Paris, which he did with a train that astonished even the Parisians by its magnificence, than he disgusted the French court by declaring love to its queen, the beautiful Anne of Austria, so that Cardinal Richelieu was glad to hasten his de parture with the princess, which was effected in eight days.
