Excerpt from A History of the Canadian Bank of Commerce, Vol. 2: With an Account of the Other Banks Which Now Form Part of Its OrganizationS volume closes at the end of 1918, so that, to be exact, it covers about twenty months more than the first half-century of the bank's existence, to which period the record was intended to be confined.The end of 1918, however, is so strongly marked as an epoch in history that its selection seemed a matter of course. Again, as the year 1918 drew to its close the bank reached its goal of a rest or reserve fund equal to its paid-up capital and recommenced that development which had been interrupted by the Great War. The next chapter of its history is still in the making.In the preface to Volume I of this work I have said that chapter III of this volume had been written by Mr. P. C. Stevenson, of Ottawa, and chapter VII by Dr. Adam Shortt. The diagrams illustrating various aspects of the growth of the bank are the 'work of the bank's archivist, Mr. H. O. E. Asman.
