Tbe first books of con sequence in tbis realm witbin reacb of tbe student are Wheatley's Historical Portraits, tbc famous Lodge's Portraits, and tbe fine series of Oxford Portraits. Concerning miniatures tbe essays and books of Dr. Williamson are all excellent. Freeman o'donoghue's Catalogue of Portraits of Queen Elizabeth (1894) is valuable, as are tbe catalogues of tbe Glasgow Portraits by Heath Wilson in 1868 tbc Yorkshire Portraits at Leeds in 1869 tbe Royal Academy Winter Exhibitions from 1870 tbe Worcester display of 1882, tbe Grosvenor Gallery Winter Reynolds display of 1883-4, and tbe following 1884 - 5 Gains borough display tbereat, followed by tbe 1886 Millais sbow, tbe 1887 Van Dyck sbow, and tbc Century of British Art of 1888 and of 1889. But it was in 1889 tbat tbe catalogue of tbe superb House of Stuart display at tbe New Gallery started tbis valuable series of records, tbe House of Tudor following in 1 890, tbe House of Guelph in 1891, and Victorian Portraits in 1892. Of 1894. Were tbe two fine displays of Fair Women, and of 1895 tbe Old Scottish Portraits and tbe F air Children at tbe Grafton Galleries.
