Excerpt from A Hand-Book of Exeter, New Hampshire On the evening of April 19, 1775, a rumor reached Exeter of the fight at Lexington, and immediately the town was all excitement, at daybreak on the receipt of fuller particulars, the alarm bells called the people to arms. The unanimous voice was that every man that could be spared should march at once to the relief of their countrymen, and at nine o'clock on that day a company of one hundred and eight men were assembled in front of the court-house - nearly opposite the First church - under the command of Captain Hackett, ready to start. They arrived at the common in Cambridge at two o'clock on the following afternoon. At the end of a fortnight the emergency having passed, they were allowed to return home highly complimented by the officers with whom they came in contact.
