A Forest Survey of the Town of Redding, Conn (Classic Reprint)

Excerpt from A Forest Survey of the Town of Redding, ConnAt that time the value of the forest to the inhabitants of the town was much greater than it is at present. Methods of transportation were so poor that the inhabitants were dependent on the forests for fuel to heat their buildings, as well as for the other uses mentioned above. The best of the timber went into saw logs, and probably only the tops and poorer trees were used as fuel and for charcoal. The relatively small quantity of lum ber cut was due to the heavy cost of hauling the logs to the mills and the sawed product to market. The introduction of the port able mill and cheap coal caused great changes in the handling of the woodlands. Now the logs are sawed in the woodlot, and only the sawed material is hauled out. The decreased demand for wood and the total elimination of charcoal from the market has made lumbering operations as conducted at present much more wasteful than formerly.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
