Excerpt from A Dissertation on Light and Vision: Defended Before the Medical Society of Philadelphia, in the Year 1809In treating the subject of vision, the first and most essential matter of enquiry is llgh'i' since it is the sole mean by which it is effected and without correct know ledge of which, hypothesis and ignorance must conse quently preside the subject. -but in pursuance of this proposition, 1 am forced to acknowledge, with the gene ral fuess of mankind, my ignorance: for in vain has the ingenuity of man for. Ages been employed in developing this infinitely difficult subject. It does, therefore, seem removed far from the limited views and narrow com prehension of mankind, though they are the most noble and wonderful of all terrestrial beings.
