The purest and noblest love of the olden time is that which draws from its annals motives of gratitude and thanksgiving for the past - counsels and warnings for the future." These remarks are as forcibly just as they are unquestionably true. History is the language of the past, whether perpetuated by tradition, monumental inscriptions, ancient records and manuscripts, or the more modern art of printing, not inaptly termed "the art preservative of all arts." Her voice is heard, repeated by ten thousand tongues and re-echoed through remotest ages, from the earliest dawn of time, and never to cease until time itself shall be no longer.The history of the past is of deep interest to every thoughtful mind. We dwell upon it treasure it up and cherish it in our memory. In a great measure we live upon preceding events. From the past we derive present encouragement and by the past we are warned and counselled.
