Need of a work of this description in the daily labors of his store, the Author was induced to commence the present compilation. At that time he had no idea of its publication, and it was only at the urgent request of many of his friends that he was finally induced to give his consent. In the preparation of this work, he has endeavored to obtain not only all the Local or Common Names in use in the various sections of the United States, but also in Great Britain, and he trusts that but few, if any, have been overlooked. In Part I, the Local Name generally adopted and used is put in Italic. In Part II, where there is more than one Botanical Name for the same Local Name, the correct one is italicised to distinguish it from the others. The compilation has been prepared upon strictly Botanical Rules, and as far as the Author can ascertain from those who have critically examined the work, and who are. Fully competent to judge, it is accurate. The result of his labors is now submitted to the Pharmacists of the United States, hoping that it may meet with their approbation, and be of service to them.
