Excerpt from A Bit Bookie of Verse: In the English and Scots Tongues
A Bit Bookie of Verse.
Proem.
I've read this little volume through,
I wonder, did I write the hook?
Its verses sound so strange and new -
It has an unfamiliar look!
Bookie, the secret's yours and mine,
If any question, "is it his?"
You saw me pen it, every line,
And stoutly you'll maintain "it is!"
But if they say "'tis so he sings"
Say naught - why tell them they are wrong?
They need not know these are the things
That came between me and my song.
