Daena has chosen pottery, baskets and authentic Indian artifacts as subjects to illustrate her skill and expression in handling a most difficult media - watercolor. "Watercolor is a magical medium for me, the images can appear loose, tight, brilliant or dull, soft or vibrant and this is important to me in order to have a full range of expression in my work." After studying Southwestern Literature at Northern Arizona University, Daena became intensely interested in Indian arts and culture. She researches her subjects carefully, often using prehistoric symbols which are found on ceramics of the Hohokam and the Mogollon cultures - rain, sun, clouds, lightning and animal symbols appear throughout her paintings. The originality of her work and the rich vibrant colors are intensified by her fine draftsmanship. Painting was an easy and early choice for Daena - she began when she was five years old and sold her first painting at the age of seven. Her formal training includes: Art Center. St. Louis, Mo. Arizona State University - Northern Arizona University Graphic Art with Ron Macklin She was employed as an artist, illustrator for Motorola and has taught technical illustration in the Industrial Arts Department and also in the Fine Arts Department at Yavapai College.
