Excerpt from 1737-1747, Diary of Rev. Daniel Wadsworth, Seventh Pastor of the First Church of Christ in Hartford: With Notes by the Fourteenth PastorThe Diary is essentially a dry, prosaic, and commonplace one. The writer of it was all his life a valetudinarian, and apparently at no time a man of keenness of observation or pungency of expression. He was a timid, cautious, sincere-hearted pastor, distinctly evangelic in spirit and inspired by a conscientious if not strenuous desire to do a good part in his time. His time, however, was rather a dull one in his church's history save for two features, one of lesser and one of far larger concern. The matter of lesser importance was the building of a new church edifice, the second one in the church's history, to take the place of the old one erected by the first fathers on this soil. The other was the episode in religious affairs marked by the preachings of George Whitefield and his followers and known as the time of the Great Awakening. In his relation to this pass age of our New England story Mr. Wadsworth-and with him the great body of his church - took a conservative attitude. And for readers outside of Hartford associations it is doubtless this feature of the present Diary which will lend it most interest. The observations made by its writer upon this most memorable portion of the history of his time are indeed painfully lacking in the racy and picturesque qualities we might naturally look for, but they avail, nevertheless, to show clearly the perplexities and strug gles of a class of devout and sincere Christian ministers, of whom Mr. Wadsworth was only one among many, who were not able to sympathize with the new measures introduced by the Great Awak4 prefatory note.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
